I've also used the older graphics mod that makes the planets/stars look better and changes the backdrop of the galaxy to look more like the Milky Way background. They're not idiots any longer with the mod, at least. The AI mod fixes most of those problems, and if you play on Hard, the AI is actually very challenging but will still give you a good contest on Normal. Hell, just knowing how to build good ships puts you ahead of them by a considerable margin. Icemania's AI Mod: You'll find that DW's AI does stupid things later on. Pretty sure the devs even said at some point that a lot of them play with it as well. It is incredibly well done and there is unilateral agreement across the forums that it is the best mod for the game for what it adds.
